About KD Schnee

KD Schnee, author of The Rabbit in the Moon, a children's picture book about courage, confidence, and emotional growth.

Author of The Rabbit in the Moon, writing stories that help kids face fear, hesitation, and self-doubt.

KD Schnee is the author of The Rabbit in the Moon, a children’s picture book created to help kids move through fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt with courage, heart, and tiny brave hops. He writes for children who pause before trying, avoid what feels overwhelming, or need a little more emotional safety before they can begin.

At the center of his work is a simple belief: bravery does not begin when fear disappears. It begins when a child feels supported enough to take one small step forward. Through Yabbit the Rabbit, KD Schnee creates children’s picture books and parent resources that help families talk about hesitation, courage, anxiety, and big feelings in ways young children can understand.

Stories for children who need help starting bravely

KD writes stories that help children feel seen in moments of hesitation.

His work is especially meaningful for kids who freeze before trying, hold back when something feels uncertain, or need reassurance before taking action. Rather than treating fear as failure, his stories help children understand that courage can begin in small, steady, emotionally safe ways.

That is the heart of The Rabbit in the Moon: helping children see that fear does not have to make every decision.

Created with care and shaped by thoughtful review

While creating The Rabbit in the Moon, KD sought thoughtful outside perspective to make sure the story connected in a meaningful and emotionally honest way.

The book was reviewed with highly regarded elementary school teachers in Los Angeles, along with a respected anthropologist from Copenhagen. Their feedback helped strengthen the story’s emotional clarity and reinforce its value not only as a beautiful picture book, but also as a conversation starter families can truly use.

The story behind Yabbit

Yabbit was first imagined by KD Schnee’s mother, Barbara Bedner, in the late 1990s. Years later, after her dementia diagnosis and before her passing in 2024, bringing Yabbit to life became more than a creative idea. It became a promise rooted in love, memory, and the hope of carrying something meaningful forward. That promise became The Rabbit in the Moon.

Inspired in part by KD’s own childhood tendency to hesitate or avoid when something felt too big, the story gives children a character they can recognize in themselves. Yabbit is not fearless. He is uncertain, cautious, and deeply relatable. Through his journey, young readers discover something important: confidence is not about never being afraid. It is about learning that fear does not have to decide everything.

Where the imagination began

KD grew up in Bull Valley, Illinois, on a former Christmas tree farm, where woods, wonder, and nightly read-alouds helped shape his imagination from an early age.

Those experiences planted the seeds for the kind of stories he writes now: stories that feel comforting, emotionally true, and quietly brave. His work is rooted in memory, family, and the belief that children deserve stories that do more than entertain. They should also help them grow.

A story with heart, purpose, and legacy

Today, KD Schnee writes with a clear mission: to create books that help children feel seen, help parents begin meaningful conversations, and help families build courage one small hop at a time.

The Rabbit in the Moon is more than a picture book. It is a legacy of love, a reflection on fear and growth, and an invitation for children to believe that even the smallest brave step matters.
