A Race Against Time: The Story Behind Yabbit the Rabbit’s Creation
Director Christopher Nolan often explores one recurring theme in his films, time. From Memento and The Dark Knight Trilogy to Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet, time becomes an essential obstacle each character must face.
In many ways, Yabbit the Rabbit was created in a similar race against time.
To understand why, we must travel back to the 1990s, when my mother first coined her famous phrases: “No more yeah buts” and “Yabbit Rabbit.”
The Spark That Waited for Its Moment
When I was in college at the turn of the millennium, my mother encouraged me to create the world of Yabbit the Rabbit and write his stories. Although I loved writing, I didn’t feel ready. The idea wasn’t mine originally, and I had no clue where to begin.
She, too, never felt confident enough to write it herself. So, the idea sat quietly, collecting dust.
On March 24, 2004, I even purchased the Yabbit the Rabbit domain name hoping to spark momentum, but again, inspiration didn’t come. I may have been the spark that inspired my mother’s character, but the passion was truly hers.
A Mother’s Unwavering Belief
My mother’s belief in my ability to bring her creation to life never faded.
The last correspondence I have from her is dated November 8, 2007.
At that time, she had met a children’s book illustrator searching for a story for ages 7–10 and encouraged me to connect. Yet again, my hesitation returned, and the project slipped away.

Time, Love, and Loss
Fast forward to July 2024. I received a call from my mother’s memory care home. In 2018, she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and the nurse informed me that her health was rapidly declining. That call drove a stake through my heart, reminding me how fragile and precious time truly is.
For years, I had held onto this extraordinary idea, always saying, “Yeah, but I’ll do it later.” But that moment changed everything. I realized there could be no more “yeah buts.”
It was time to honor my mother, thank her for her incredible imagination, and finally bring Yabbit the Rabbit to life, the story she dreamed of but never had the chance to tell.
